friends

I love these girls....

April

and lisa
and Jessica

It was so great to see so many good friends!

and Kelli came up from Akron and spent a wonderful day with us!

It was so fun to see all the cute kids together. Most of them have been born since we last saw each other 3.5 years ago!( I am holding Kelli's baby Emily and Lisa is holding her Charlotte.

Lisa talked Joe into babysitting so that Kelli, Lisa and I could go out to Northstar Cafe..a very hip/healthy/organic place.

As luck would have it, Beth Johnston was also in town for a couple of the days that I was there. It was fun to see her and her two little guys.

It was really great to talk to everyone. Get the real story about how life is for each of these women, what is going on in life, how residency is going (for most), and catch up. Being face to face is so much better than blogging, email, etc. (although I don't see how we could live without those)! Thank you all for being so accommodating and making such a great week for me! You are so talented and amazing and FUN!!

BEAUTIFUL FALL WALKS in Columbus

One thing I did lots of in Columbus was walking .... it was such beautiful fall weather and fall scenery I wanted to be outside all the time.

(don't make fun of my photography. I am not a photographer!)

Sunday morning I walked around a cute little pond with Jessica and her darling kids.

One day I walked from Westborough to Lisa's house and took some pictures of trees, etc. as I went.

One day Lisa and I went walking down by the river!

One day we went walking around Ohio State Campus...pictures to come later!

home from ohio

I am home. The trip was fabulous--so good to see everyone and be in ohio. I have a lot of pics to post but no time to do it now. For now here is one with my good friend Brutus.
My favorite video of Ohio ..(click on video)... at the new student union. Makes me tear up everytime. I love Ohio State!
And Lisa and I in the student union!

Dave seems to have done pretty well with the kids at home. I think they ate about 40 doughnuts while I was gone!

Princess Clare and her roommate

ast week we had the big sister little sister princess party. The mutual girls host this event for the primary age girls. They each take 1 or 2 little sisters and take care of them for the night. We've done halloween parties, PJ parties, and this year a princess party. The big and little girls all dressed like princesses (big girls in prom type dresses). It was really great. I think the big girls loved to dress up as much as the little girls. Clare even insisted that I wear my "date dress" (the purple one I wore to the neurosurgery dinner last year) so that I would look nice.

Clare got her face painted there and wouldn't wash it off before bed.

Here is what it looks like w/ Clare and Tressel in bed. Clare always makes sure Tressel is covered before bed.

what we eat

Quite a few months ago we changed our eating habits somewhat dramatically. I would say that we still have much room for improvement before we are where we want to be for life, but we have taken some great strides in the right direction.

The main things I have tried to do are:

1. MORE VEGGIES. lb for lb these are the best foods! Nothing really compares nutrition wise with these foods. They are also so yummy.
2. MORE FRUIT.

3. less processed food.

4. Replace most things we eat w/ fruit and veggies. --including snacks for the kids. I don't buy crackers and snack foods anymore. I pack a bag bread, fruit and a knife( sounds weird, I know) so that I can bring healthy snacks to the playgrounds and other outings we're on. I have actually found that feeding the kids healthy food out of the house is easy this way b/c they are always so hungry when they play and they don't' want to take the time to argue b/c the are having fun and also if I only have good food w/ me there is really no choice but to eat it or go hungry.

5. reduce meat. we are not strict vegetarians...we just thought that replacing meat with veggies gives more nutrients and less calories and is more delicious. We haven't cooked w/ meat at home for almost this entire year. We still eat meat other places and enjoy it here and there...it is just not a staple in our home!

6. reduce salt. Dave is for sure a major cheerleader for this one. He told me a while ago when I said I thought I wanted to change our diet, "okay, but make sure when you do, you get rid of salt." One of the first things to go was cream of .... soup recipes and other things that have added salt!

7. good grains. I have never been one to buy white bread but I have tried to get other refined grains out of the diet. Our family is BIG on pasta but will not eat whole wheat pasta so we've been slow to get rid of pasta, but when we do eat it, it has lots of veggies. They will do soba noodles.

8. vitamix. I got a vitamix this year. I have wanted one a long time but never dared spend so much $ on a blender, but it has been great. It is a good way to load up on fruits and veggies. A staple smoothie: 1 orange, 1 banana, 1 cup berries, 1 TB flax, 1 handful of spinach. It is amazing. so fresh and so good. Dave has started to make real treats in there with malt powder, sugar and stuff like that which is fun also, but not really good.

9. less dairy. Dairy is fine. I'm not a milk hater or anything. I just think water is best to drink. Milk is not a necessary staple for life. Calcium is found in many other foods.

10. ice cream. I decided that if I am going to eat something unhealthy, I AM GOING TO LOVE IT!!! I learned that many of the meals I were eating were not really that great for me. I was happy to give them up for healthier and better meals, and then I save my extra calories for ice cream and other goodies. :)

Results: Dave lost 30 lbs this year. I never would have thought he had that much to lose, but I guess he had picked up a lot of extra weight eating hospital cafeteria food. I lost about 5 lbs...the rest of my baby weight. It feels good.

The truth: My kids are super tough. Each of them has a few healthier things they'll eat but overall they are not really on board. I need to work on getting them fed and also having a better family meal time. It is still a weakness of mine to be totally organized and ready for dinner so we can all sit down together.

Must Read: Eat to Live by Dr. Fuhrman. This was the best food book I have ever read. BY FAR. It was the book where I finally realized that in order to eat all the good foods I wanted I had to give up some of the not as good foods to fit them all in. I remember reading other books and thinking "man, there is not enough meals in the day to get in the fruits, nuts, veggies, etc. that should be in a day...how do I do it." Fuhrman's book finally helped me figure it out.

$: I can't say we have really dramatically increased our food bill. Buying lots of fruit and veggies can be expensive but snack foods for lots of little kids is also expensive.

This is my favorite meal...one we eat a lot. Veggie tacos.

These veggies are also great hot over a salad with guacamole as the dressing. That is dave's favorite meal.

Another variation on the taco w/ layers of beans and veggies and spinach.

OH-IO

This is Calvin asleep at 9:30am on our way to something last Saturday morning. He also took a nap one morning this week from about 8-9:30am and went to school late. I do not know what the reason is for him having such a difficult time being rested in the night. The sleep dr. we went to dismissed us from care last spring basically saying that everything tested normal and hoped that w/ a more relaxing summer schedule he'd work things out. I would say he slept a little better in the summer, but as I mentioned before Dan was up most nights all night so he was able to help Calvin go to the bathroom and do noise control so I didn't hear him at all. He has also fallen asleep in school one time this year and then one time the teacher told me she thought he was tired in the afternoon.

I hate to complain about trivial things, but I am telling you, it is tough to wait NEARLY EIGHT YEARS to have a child sleep through the night.....I need a break. And guess what, I am getting one!!!!

Today I am going to Ohio ALL BY MYSELF!!!

:) Bless Dave for babysitting all week and bless Dave's attending for helping schedule Dave's days off and using his miles to buy my ticket. I have never had a trip like this and I am very excited.

( and I actually caught up on my blogging so I have a few posts coming up while I'm gone!)

cousins!

A couple of weeks ago we went up to Orange County to see the kids' cousins (they had just finished a weekend at Disneyland). It was a fun afternoon to spend together. The kids love each other and it is fun to see them grow in their friendships as they get older.

Clare and Emi -- two girly girls and best buds!

Dave had a blast pushing the kids on the tire swing. I thought for sure someone would fall off or get sick, but the all loved it and begged for more!

I never got a good one of the entire group! bummer!

dave

Yes, he is BLOWING on the ds. It is a new trick he learned. Now you know where my kids learned to be obsessed with things. Note to you: If you ever use our ds, be sure to wash your hands afterwards. That thing goes everywhere, including the bathroom!

last week

We had a sick house -- a stomach bug. It was horrible.

*Mon night: Calvin (it all started at 5pm when Calvin said "Mom, I think I just went poo in my pants." This is not what a mom wants to hear!)
*Wed night: Clare
*Th night: Alexey
*Sat night: Dan and Dave

The good news: nobody threw up on the floor.

The bad news: I didn't get it. I don't know I will or if I somehow escaped the misery. Every meal I eat, I think "how will this taste coming back up?" It is torture to me.

The good news: as far as stomach bugs go, it wasn't too bad.

The bad news: actually Dave got it worse than anyone else. That combined with his whining was pretty sad.

The good news: As far as I know we didn't spread it to anyone outside of our house.

air show - our favorite annual event

The kids LOVE the parking situation because we get to take a very exciting BUS over to the show.

It is fun to see all the different helicopters and airplans and talk to the pilots.

The kids are much more interested in their little programs!

You have already had fair warning about how much the kids love michigan so I have to apologize for all the yellow and blue. At least I got a Ohio State hat on Calvin! It's kind of funny to see the Ohio State hat with the Mich shirt.

beyond obsession

My kids are obsessed w/ michigan. It is a little out of control. Here is some evidence

conversation~
mom/Denise: "Kids, where would you rather go? Disneyland or Michigan?"

Calvin and Clare: "MICHIGAN!!!! So, can we go there, mom?"

Today I took Calvin to the store and let him get some new socks. He REFUSED to go up to size large because the large socks have a L on the bottom. He only wants to wear size medium b/c they have a "Michigan M" on the bottom.

conversation between dog lady and Alexey

A few days ago we saw a lady at the park with a sweet little dachshund putty. Lex and this poor lady were having a long conversation about dogs and life in general and I had to translate the baby talk with each sentence so that she could understand alexey. This was the highlight. Lex was hugging and petting this dog and for whatever reason got a big kick out of the tail.

Dog lady: Yes, that is a tail?

Alexey: ohhhh

Dog lady: Does your dog have a tail?

Lex: yes

Dog lady: Do you have a tail?

Lex: no

.
.
.(lex is thinking...what do I have?)
.
Lex: I have butt

Denise: Lex has a big brother

Dog lady: I see!
