Thursday night I had a soccer game from 9-10. When I got home I was dirty nd wide awake so I decided to finish my painting while the kids were asleep. As luck would have it, Calvin woke up around midnight as I was finishing and came to see it. He thinks it is great and wants purple stripes in his room too. :)
Before: the room is kind of a yellowish color. the little spots on the wall are spackeling (white) filling all the holes in the wall. I filled 49 holes. Some small, others a bit bigger.

One of the reasons I've wanted to paint Clare's room is because there were 2 colors of paint in there. Either someone painted around the furniture or the sun faded the paint and left another color where the furniture was hiding the paint. Here is the best shot I have of the 2 colors of paint (in the bottom center of the wall).

Here is Clare's bed since I started this project (July 3rd). She likes to sleep with the big blanket (the one on the floor) over the pack n play so that it is dark. She is used to a dark room as she has a room darkening shade in there.

This is what took forever! I decided to paint stripes in the room. Taping for the stripes was a nuisance but I did eventually get into a groove and it wasn't so bad. I'd do it again.

I alternated flat and glossy paint of the same color. First you paint the entire room with flat paint and then paint only glossy paint in the appropriate spots. Here are a couple of tips for good clean lines. 1. take the tape off while the paint is wet. Then the lines don't bleed under the tape ( I had read this and it worked for me. Speaking to other people who didn't do this had trouble with paint bleeding. It wouldn't have mattered that much since I'm using the same color paint.). Don't leave the tape up for long or it will tear off the paint as you pull the tape off. It took me 3 or 4 days to do my taping and when I took it off as I painted it did tear off some paint but only on one strip that I had done the first day.

I still have a little work -- moving furniture and hanging a few things on the wall but I'll give the paint a couple of days to dry first. Hopefully Clare will want to move back in as soon as we're done. I have a bucket of water in there to absorb the stinky smell (thanks for the tip, Deanne)! I'll change the background color to black so you can see the color of the paint. It's super light purplish blue and looks much better now that I have all the blue tape off the walls and doors!
I like the way it looks so far. I think part of why I have never done home improvements is that I'm a bit of a perfectionist. Hard to really believe since my house doesn't look perfect, but the reason I say that is becuase doing this project has killed me becuase I wish I could do more. I want to replace the carpet - it's 15 years old. I'd like to replace the window -- I can't open it (only dave can). There is only so much i can do on a limited budget and doing a little makes me want to do it all. I wish I could have the room just perfect.
It has been fun to do a little work though since it's helped me to see that I can do things in the house. I can find home depot and nagivate my way around. Oh, by the way I have a good story about a recent trip to home depot I'll have to add for my next post.
