hospital pics

Jo loved the hospital binkies. I have been trying to get her to take one at home and she hasn't liked them much so I was happy to find that these ones worked! I aksed the nurse to get us a few extras so that we'd have them in the future. She brought me 7 more...hopefully that'll get us through our 2 years of binkie use. They are vanilla scented and we all love orange in our family.

hanging out in the hospital room and taking pictures of ourselves in the mirror.

JoAnne spent most of the time happily sleeping as babies her age usually do!

Momma did not get much sleep. Here I am not sleeping
here is the "bed"

we are home and my bed is calling.

time to catch up on 3 nights of lost sleep

be careful what you wish for

Well, it looks like I got the extra day in the hospital that I wished I had taken 3 weeks ago. Only, it was/is NOT RESTFUL at all.

First, let me start by saying we're fine.

Now, on to the story.

So, JoAnne was running a low grade fever Tues night. I woke up dave around 2am to tell him she had a fever of 100.4 which is exactly the cutoff to take a newborn into the ER. We watched her close for a while and decided that since she was eating well and really great it was not worth the risk of taking her to the hospital where she'd be poked prodded and exposed to everything ikcy in the world.

We also figured it was more than likely that she has the virus/cold that lex has had this week rather than a serious and life threatening bacterial infection so we thought we'd just watch her for a while.

She was fine Wed during the day and then wed night was running a fever again. This time a little higher and definitely over the threshold for an infant her age. plus she was whining all nignt and wouldn't sleep unless I was holding her and obviously not feeling well at all. Dave was on call at the hospital but when he got home at 6am and felt how warm she was and heard about how fussy she was he told me I had to bring her in. So, even though I didn't want to do it, I decided to bring her to the hospital knowing it meant Lumbar puncture (LP), and many other pokes, antibiotics and admission for at least one day.

We arrived at the ER around 7am yesterday (TH). Her temp measured 101.5. They gave her Tylenol which helped her feel much better. Once she got that Tylenol and it kicked in after 20 or 30 she didn't fuss at all when they continued to bother her. She got an iv put in, blood drawn, urine drawn and the LP. We were admitted and told we'd just wait out the results of the labs and cultures. She looked great, acted great and seemed just fine and has been doing super well the entire time we have been here. It is standard procedure to keep the babies for 48-72 hours but since she is looking so well and the cultures are negative so far we are going to get out of here a little early (after about 36 hours) as long as everything looks good this evening.

I hate having her here in the hospital as it is super stressful knowing that there is so much illness around and I worry about her catching something while we're here. Last night about 3 am they added a patient to our room. It was a girl life-flighted over b/c of seizures. When they were doing the history on her I heard them talking about fevers and pneumonia. Mother bear was not happy about sharing a room with a contagious patient. Nursing staff didn't realize she had communicable illness and moved her out immediately. When she left I sanitized the room and then housekeeping came in to sanitize also. I hate hospitals. And I love them too.

JoAnne has been a happy little camper here. She has been sleeping and eating and pooping and peeing as newborns should. She surprisingly hasn't been bothered at all by the IV on her arm. She does not like to have her temp taken (rectal) and despises the blood pressure cuff tightening on her leg.

I am tired. and a little bored. But I did finish a great book while I was here. The Beekeepers Apprentice by Laurie R. King.

I am also so grateful that it is summer and not winter when the really bad respiratory infections are going around. If and that is a BIG IF! I have another baby I will try for spring or summer again since it is so hard to keep the big kid germs off of the babies when there are so many bodies in the house and you can't very well keep the entire family home for 2 months!

Also, Daves schedule is pretty light right now so he has been able to help out with the kids while I am stuck here which is nice for them and also for me. I feel I have abused my friends' kindness enough over this past month.

We have had a lot of help this month and I am grateful for everyone who has helped. Hopefully we can get life under control soon so I don't have to keep asking for help!

well, wish us luck -- hopefully we'll be home this evening.

I have some pics to add when I get home.

This morning they did add another patient to our room. She is a 4 year old girl with nephrotic syndrome. (Not contagious but still not great to share a room in my opinion). Her mom is gone running errands so nurses are helping watch her and I call the nurses if/when she needs something. I don't mind helping at all -- I am bored out of my mind so it gives me a little something else to do. Not to be too judgmental, but I can't really imagine leaving a 4 year old in the hospital alone. I makes me nervous to even go to the bathroom and have my eyes off JoAnne for 30 seconds.

And jessica, to answer your question about sharing a room -- yes, she does have to walk right across us to get to the bathroom which is in our corner of the world. not a good setup at all. why do they even have shared rooms?

2 weeks old! JoAnne was up to 7lbs. 2oz. so she is gaining weight fine and growing well.

After baths with underwear only...I so wish they were all dressed since it is such a great picture of them all!! I love these 4 kiddos!

JoAnne is most alert and awake in the evening. Last night after Lex was in bed Calvin and Clare got to snuggle with Jo and take pictures of each other holding her. Lex has a cold this week so I've been trying to keep her away from baby but it is very frustrating for her. She says, "I not sick." "I wash my hands" ... it is nothing serious but I don't want the baby to get it!

swimming!! jo and i sit in the shade while the kids swim. lex is totally wild and clare has become a strong and independent swimmer. I have told our friends that we swim at home every day at 3:30 and they are welcome to come join us. At 3:30 htere is good shade for me and the baby to sit in so we can watch the kids. It has been a great couple of weeks. (calvin didnt' come the one day I had my camera so I'll have to take it out agian)

one day lex was chewing on a pen and it exploded in her mouth and all over ger clothes. luckily she was already wearing a grubby tshirt since we were about to keave for art.

We have had a great summer. only a few very hot days so far. usually it is hottest in Aug and Sept so we still have our hottest yet to come. for our couple of pretty hot days, I let the baby wore just a blanket and diaper. she wiggled her tiny naked arms out and I thought it was adorable. Everything about jo is adorable!

pardon my bad typing and quick notes...I am one handed...getting a few pics up while I feeding the babe!

In other news, i have squeezed into some regular clothes which is nice (even though they are a few sizes bigger than my normal clothes). I am feeling good, baby is sleeping well, everything is great. not perfect of course but we're good. I have had so much help the last 2 weeks it has really helped me get my feet on the ground. I am so thankful.

profound thoughts

Dave: "I think I'll enjoy parenting teenagers. With little kids they are always climbing all over you and want to be with you all the time. When they are teenagers they will go to their rooms and want to be left alone. That will be fine with me."

Calvin: "Next time we have a baby and it is a brother, let's paint it with orange and black strips and call him Hobbes for Halloween."

one week old

Oh, it is so fun having a cute little baby in the house!

JoAnne likes to sleep in her car seat. So far, this has been her home. It is nice and portable and small enough to move if I need to!

lex is definitely the one who asks to hold the baby the most. One morning I heard her open the door first thing in the morning as she was coming out of her room saying, "JoAnne.....where are you?" She is often baby hunting! (I sometimes "hide" JoAnne so that she can have some rest without little hands all over her!) Lex does a good job washing her hands and sitting down so she is ready for her turn to hold JoAnne.

One morning Clare held JoAnne for a long time, and eventually JoAnne fell asleep in her arms. Clare now knows she is an expert baby holder!

Sisters!! I never had any sisters myself so I feel these girls are very lucky!

Many have asked how Tressel has done with a new baby. I would say of all the living creatures in the house he has been the easiest to deal with. He smells the baby once or twice a day. Does not lick her. And then he walks away. He has been surprisingly mellow which makes me think he can sense that I need a little peace. (The kids cannot sense that at all and have been crazy, whining and completely baffled as to why I am resting, napping and not going any place fun. Calvin has asked me every morning, "can we go to sea world today?")

Calvin is not in any of these pictures but he is here!! He loves JoAnne. He told dave a couple of days ago, "I love JoAnne more than I love anyone else in the world."

I came home Friday night (day after she was born). This was a mistake. I could have stayed til sat morning but dave begged me to come home and assured me I'd get more rest at home, where he would take care of the 3 big kids, than in the hospital with nurses bothering me. By the time we got home it was 11pm. By midnight we were laying down to bed and the @#$* pager went off. I packed up my baby and went to the guest room to sleep. Baby was up several times, Clare was up twice crying becuase her ear hurt. I tried texting dave so he could take care of clare but he slept right through it. I made several trips up and down the stairs getting medicine for clare and drinks for her during the night. I was not a happy camper. By the next afternoon I was somewhat over my bitterness but still very tired. I know Dave had good intentions, but once I was home there wasn't really any way to keep the big kids from bothering me every minute. They were super excited to have me home and see the new baby. That is just the nature of the game when you have more than just a baby. 4 kids is BUSY!! This is a picture of us getting ready to leave the hospital around 9:30 or 10pm.

JoAnne joins the family

Jessica took some great pictures on her camera and emailed them along. I love these closeups of little Jo!

The kids came to see JoAnne this morning. Lex was obsessed with her. It was pretty cute. Clare also loved holding her. Calvin didn't want to hold her (typical boy response) but does love her!

We didn't tell the kids her name 'til they got here this morning. Here I was telling them her name and letting them meet her for the first time. It was such a sweet moment!

labor induction -updated

This morning I said to dave, "I'm pretty tired today." He replied, "good, because you're going to sit around and do nothing all day." hmmm, interested interpretation of labor

Yesterday - had an OB appt and was at a 2.

Today -
6:45 am check in and wait and wait and wait in lobby

8am into room

9am dr breaks my water and checks me. I'm at a 4-5. She thought we can wait a couple of hours w/o pitocin to see what happens and so I am free to walk around.

12pm checked again still a 4. starting pitocin now.

3:30pm at a 5. got epidural. I forgot how much it hurts to get an epidural. Not sure if I forgot or if it is different this time but it made me shake like crazy all afternoon.

5pm at a 7

5:40 at a 10 waiting for dr.

5:52 baby "pops out" after 3 pushes. The popping out was pretty easy. The labor from 2pm 'til baby popped out not as easy.

Baby 6lbs. 13oz. 19 inches long. Everything is going well so far. It is nice to have her out and know things went so well and we are both healthy.

Tomorrow morning the kids will get to come meet her!

Bless Jessica who is home with my 3 kiddos in my non air-conditioned house which is probably 90 by now.

Hopefully next update will be a baby in a few more hours.

While we are waiting dave is learning to use his photo editing program. Here are some of his masterpieces of the day.
