you might die of boredom with this post....

These are my thoughts on Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

There are a few parts of the post that will give away parts of the plot, but the real spoiler is at the end of the post and labeled clearly.

This was an amazing book and I can see why it is such a well read book and also why dave enjoyed it so much. I can’t say that it was a personal favorite as I enjoy a good mystery or more uplifting story…however Tolstoy is a great writer and I feel that the journey of reading the book is a good one! Overall I liked the first half of the book better than the second half. Reason being Anna had not completely destroyed her life and so for me there was still some hope of her making a good choice and I was in suspense as to what would happen. During the second half of the book she was completely ruined and I would have liked to push her in front of a train at any time (inside joke for those who have read the book). There were also a couple of scenes that were boring to me in the second half of the book, namely, Levin’s wedding and the elections.

I have some favorite parts/quotes that I’ll share. I realize that this won’t be interesting to many of you but it goes in my book journal and I have been dying to discuss this book with someone who has read it (someone other than dave) so if you have comments, please leave them even if they are long!! I wasn’t able to keep track of all my favorite things in the book b/c I listened to the audio book for most of the story. So I’d go back into the written book and mark some favorites on occasion but didn’t get them all.

When Anna and Vronsky first had their love affair this was not a favorite part but the description was amazing. “He felt what a murderer must feel, when he sees the body he has robbed of life. . . .And with fury, as it were with passion, the murderer falls on the body, and drags it and hacks at it; so he covered her face and shoulders with kisses.”

I also thought the scene at the horse races near the beginning of the book was fascinating the way Tolstoy described the scene from all angles. I esp. liked his description of Alexey Alexandrivich’s discovery. (not that I liked what happened. I liked the description. I didn’t like much of what happened in the book but did like the authors way of describing what happened).

One of the characters that I liked was Dolly (Darya alexandrovna). She had lots of kids and had a idiot husband who was not faithful to her, but was a sweet and good woman. “Peaceful with six children Darya Alexandrovna could not be. One would fall ill, another might easily become so, a third would be without something necessary, a fourth would show symptoms of a bad disposition and so on. Rare indeed were the brief periods of peace. But these cares and anxieties were for Darya Alexandrovna the sole happiness possible.”

I really liked the conversation between Vronsky and Serpuhovskoy who was trying to convince Vronsky to not give up his professional career for a woman. “”there’s only one way of having love conveniently without its being a hindrance—that’s marriage . . . yes, just as you can only carry a fardeau and do something with your hands, when the fardeau is tied on your back, and that’s marriage. But to drag that fardeau about with you without marriage, your hands will always be so full that you can do nothing.” (fardeau means load)

About Seryoza, describing why he wasn’t perfectly obedient to his teacher or father: “He was nine years old; he was a child; but he knew his own soul, it was precious to him, he guarded it as the eyelid guards the eye, and without the key of love he let no one into his soul.”

I also loved the chapters about Kitty having her baby. Here is a description of what Levin was thinking, “Levin had prepared his mind to bear resolutely what was before him, and without considering or anticipating anything, to avoid upsetting his wife, and on the contrary to soothe her and keep up her courage…Levin had in his imagination braced himself to bear up and keep a tight rein on his feelings for five hours, and it had seemed to him he could do this ….But when he came back form the doctor’s and saw her sufferings again, he began to feel afraid he could not bear it,,,,such agony it was to him. And only one hour had passed…..But after that there passed another hour, two hours, three, the full five hours he had fixed as the furthest limit of his sufferings, and the position was still unchanged; and he was still bearing it because there was nothing to be done but bear it; every instant feeling that he had reached the utmost limits of his endurance. And that his heard would break with sympathy and pain.

What did you think of Alexey alexandrovich? I personally liked him up til the very end when he got a little weird. But overall I thought he was a kind man, not very affectionate and outspoken but I do think he loved Anna. When Anna was sick and he cared for her I think that is a time when his true devotion and tender disposition were revealed, though they were there all along. Dave completely disagrees with me on this point. He thinks AA is quite at fault for having put Anna in such a desperate and unloved state of mind that she would throw her life to waste for the love of Vronsky. He feels that Tolstoy describes Alexey Alexandrovich throughout the book both as obsessed with a meaningless career, unaffectionate in his home life, and also largely concerned for his wife's betrayal because of the embarrassment it brought to him socially. I, on the other hand, feel pity and affection for him b/c I think he is sincerely trying to do what is right. We have had many heated debates over this issue and I would be curious to hear what you think of him.
In a way Karenin reminds me of the Scarlet pimpernel who comes across as an idiot but is deep down a loving and passionate person.

Major SPOILER HERE::

I think countess Vronsky sums up my feelings about Anna well with her statement, “yes, hers was the fitting end for such a woman. Even the death she chose was low and vulgar.” Dave agrees with Sergey Ivanovitch, “it is not for us to judge …”

If you have not died of boredom yet, feel free to comment. I have been trying to download a book onto my MP3 player for the last hour and have spent that time writing my notes on Anna Karenina. I figure I won’t read it again for a while if ever and it is one I don’t want to forget!

a fun getting to know you survey

1. I love babies.... Alexey just had her birthday so she is on my mind. Babies are wonderful. I would have a hundred of them if they didn’t grow up and become difficult and if pregnancy didn’t cause morning sickness and if delivery didn’t cause permanent damage to my body. I am still going to have more … just not 100!
2. I fear that I will not teach my children all they need to know.
3. I crave ice cream.
4. I dislike eggplant and fish though I wish I liked them both.
5. I honor service men and women. I am so thankful for them past and present.
6. I discontinue(d) swearing when Calvin said a bad word as a toddler.
7. I require a lot of sleep. Dave and I often go to bed at the same time and then I get up about 3 hours later than him.
8. I refuse to wash Tupperware that dave takes to work and then brings home one week later. (there is still one in the sink that he brought home 2 days ago from a lunch I packed last Sunday. So not cool.) If they sit there too long I through them away.
9. I think hugs from children make my day so much brighter.
10. I perceive hypocrisy in myself sometimes and don’t like that.
11. I disengage my cable now that football season is over…and don’t’ tell Dave but I’m not signing up for it for next year.
12. I reject most TV shows.
13. I loathe indoor workouts. But I do them anyway sometimes b/c I loathe being fat even more.
14. I worry too much. one day I let Dave in on my head full of worries. His reply, “man, I couldn’t sleep if that’s what I thought about when I go to bed. I have to think happy thoughts.” I agree 100%. That is why he is asleep within 2 minutes of going to bed and I stay up for a while longer.
15. I enjoy sports tremendously. I love playing sports and also enjoy competition.
16. I contemplate getting a dog. A lot. I want a Rhodesian ridgeback. I have been thinking about it for 2 years --- ever since we moved to SD. I want family friendly dog but also a protective breed to help me feel more safe at home alone. here is a pic of a puppy and aduld rr dog (both taken from http://www.oakhurstrr.com/).

17. I cherish a good book and am always looking for something great. I am bugged when I read something that is not worth my time.
18. I pray for safety for Dave traveling the busy roads when he is sleep deprived.
19. I value my testimony of Jesus Christ and membership in His church.
20. I instigate bookclub, girls night out, and playgroup.
21. I mock using bailout $$ to pay for bonuses. Give me a break.
22. I regard a clean house as simply wonderful!
23. I struggle to be organized and to keep my house clean.
24. I respect Dave’s ability to work so hard. I know I couldn’t do it.
25. I wonder what my children will be like when they grow up. (and hope it is something good).
26. I look forward to watching Dave run a marathon in May.
27. I treasure those sweet moments when the kids are nice to each other and we are together. It is important to treasure these moments because they are often fleeting!

cutest one year old on the block!

Today Alexey turned one! Yeah! She had a fun day. It all started this morning when she woke up Calvin and Clare ran into her room and jumped into her bed and sang happy birthday to her! She loved it. then Clare gave her a present. It was wrapped in wrapping paper. Calvin helped her tear it open and as he did so, he noticed that the book looked very familiar. When the book was completely revealed Calvin burst into tears because it was actually his book that clare had so generously re-gifted for Alexey! It was pretty funny. I love one year olds. They are so sweet and so easy going (unlike 6 and 3 year olds!! ha ha)

Lex is a little under the weather so she spent most of the day napping but this evening we went to a playground to play and have cake. We have the tradition in our family of giving the one year old birthday person their own personal cake to play with and eat and destroy, feed to the birds (and in Lex's case stick up her nose) to their little heart's content. Lex loved it!

It was kind of windy so we couldn't get the candle lit. We tried about 20 matches but it just wouldn't stay lit even long enough to sing "happy" of the happy birthday song.

Here are some pics of her playing -- just so you can see more of her cute expressions!

The most common compliments I get about Alexey are:
-she looks like a doll (due to round head and no hair most likely)!
-we're all your kids so happy?

Some of our hew favorite things about her.
-if you growl she wil growl back.
-she eats everything and loves food!
-she crawls around the house panting like a little puppy

museum and park day

Tuesday down in balboa park -- museum central for san deigo -- there is free museum. Each tuesday of the month there are different museums for free. We haven't yet seen all the museums b/c usually we just go to the science one. It is funnest and most kid friendly. This week we decided to try a couple of new ones. Museum of Man and Museum of Art.

We were pretty near Dave's hospital so we stopped by to say hi. we picked him up and went to a nearby park to play for a few minutes. Usually if we are downtown we stop by and he'll jump in the car and talk for a few minutes and then we're on our way. It was much nicer to have a place to go so that the kids could play with him and stretch their legs. Dave's hospital is about 25 minutes from home so we don't go there unless we are downtown for some reason.

Alexey loves to push Clare on the swing with her feet.

The museum of man was interesting. There was an exhibit about ancient brain surgery and how many skulls that they find have big holes. Of course this was interesting to me since we have a person in our family who makes a living cutting and drilling on peoples heads.

can you believe my baby will be one next week?

balboa park is a beautiful part of SD. If you ever come to visit, be sure to go there!

Clare is a sweet heart and she will smile whenever I ask her to!

love those girls.

WE walked through the art museum as quickly as possible because the kids were a bit rowdy and ready to go home. Plus they all (even Alexey) loved to hear the sound of their own voices echoing through the big corridors and hallways. {Completely random side note: Have you ever seen the move the Thomas Crown Affair? It is one of my all time favorites. It is rated R so you have to catch it on TV sometime. I think I've seen it only twice. It is about an art thief and I think of it every time I go to an art museum.} There was a little room where you could read art books and look up the paintings from the exhibits on the computer and then practice drawing your favorite piece of art. Calvin drew a bomb. I don't know why. He does not believe me that bomb has a silent b at the end. We have been discussing it for hours all week. He is just sure there is no silent b. I have to admit that it doesn't make much sense to me either.

thank you bloggers

Hi Blogging friends. Today I was thinking about how amazing all of you are. I learn so much from seeing what you are accomplishing in your lives. I often feel completely behind and totally inadequate but I learn so much from your talents and mothering, cooking, cleaning, home-making, organizing, creating, food-storing, budgeting, etc. etc. etc.....it is great to see your families, the fun things you are learning and doing and the positive ways you are involved in church, schools, politics and community events. Thanks for your great examples.

and here is a random picture of Clare learning to (pretend) drill heads like her dad. The drill she is using was the one dave used to drill his very first hole in the head 3-4 years ago at ohio state.

things I am looking forward to

I am a planner. Does that count as a talent? If not just remain silent because if that doesn't count then I'm down one talent and I can't really afford to lose my one and only. Anyway, I think it is important to always have something to look forward to whether it is a fun girls night out (we are watching twilight in a couple of weeks for ours), or a fun date or much more.... here are some things I'm thinking about.

**donating my hair this summer. I've always wanted to do it but dave has always talked me out of it. (he hates short hair). hair always grows back though .... and out of respect for dave I'll wait 'til after his fancy dinner in June. (so I won't look "ugly" in front of all of his colleagues!)

**a trip with dave in may. no kids. anyone know the city? (i wouldn't recognize it...) actually the thought of leaving alexey makes me almost cry. I haven't been on an airplane for almost 2 years. That is a really long time for me. For the last 10 years since I graduated high school I have made at least a couple of trips per year.

**using the gift cards that dave got for his birthday (yes, I'll share with him).

**going to wicked in august. I actually bought 20 tickets. (dave was pretty surprised, but didn't complain at all about that!) because the only way to get tickets right now is in a group or season ticket holders. So, I got 20 and then have been selling them to friends who also want to go to the show. So, local people, if anyone wants tickets I still have a few left!!

t-ball

Last weekend was opening day for t-ball here. Calvin has been very excited about starting t-ball and it has been great to have one of his school friends on his team (both for him to have as a friend and for me to have someone to carpool with)!

calvins favorite part of any sporting event is the cheering before and/or after the game!
It's a hit! I wonder how he can even see with that giant hat on covering his eyes

and he's off!! When he first hit the ball he just stood there watching it and then the coach reminded him to hurry and run to first base! He threw the bad down and took off.

dave cracked up when he saw this picture becuase Calvin is not even watching the game. He's just chillin' on second base!

running so fast! (watching Calvin, and some of the other kids, run is hilarious.)

coming in to home plate!

my child is the one sitting down picking grass. I am seriously worried that he is going to get hit in the head with the ball because he's never watching the ball.

He is on the marlins.

silly faces

Here they are all lined up shortest to tallest. Calvin is shortest! He was very excited to get the jersey that said #1!

star wars

The kids have really been into star wars. All the time they play star wars and like to watch it too! I hadn’t realized ‘til this week what great appeal it would have for both the kids. Calvin loves it for all the same reasons all boys love it….great characters to imitate, fighting with light sabers, etc. And, I was surpirsed to learn how much clare likes it...she gets really into it because there is a PRINCESS!!! Ha ha. Princess Leia. She calls her princess “e-ah”. Tonight she told Dave, “let’s play star wars. I’ll be princess e-ah. you be han solo. …… and you will love me.” Seriously got a kick out of that! I don't think she's picked up on that watching the few minutes she has seen but I am guessing that Calvin told her about it.
Calvin and Dave watched The Empire Strikes back a few days ago. When it was done calvin told Dave "there were 3 parts I didn't like. 1. when Han Solo gets frozen. That was sad. 2. when darth vader says luke I am your father. 3. when luke gets his hand cut off."

Calvin's sleeping habits

haven't changed much since I used to post them on my side bar last year. He wakes up most days between 3:30-4:30 am, at which point he goes to the bathroom and then I send him back to his room with a snack and a pile of books. Often he goes to the bathroom at 5am also. He isn't allowed out 'til 6am which I consider a reasonable time to get up for myself! Some days he goes to sleep during this time and other days he just stays awake waiting 'til 6am comes.

This week has been a particularly bad week for Calvin and me. He has been up at 3:30-4 every day and every day stayed awake singing, tearing his room to pieces, and playing loudly for the 2-3 hours 'til dawn. He has been IMPOSSIBLE to deal with. He didn't finish his homework most days (I DON'T BELIEVE IN HW FOR FULL DAY K KIDS ANYWAY), had several breakdowns in parking lots, at school and at home....has fought with Clare and me, cried over what was for dinner.... we have had a seriously bad week.

Until this morning. He got up at his usual 3:30 to go potty and then went back to sleep 'til 6:30.

I had almost forgotten what a nice boy "rested Calvin" is. He is a completely different person than "tired Calvin" and I am sorry to say that we see "tired Calvin" most often. This morning he played with Clare, ate 2 breakfasts, talked non-stop about many of his great ideas for life, walked himself to class carrying a heavy extra book (which I thought for sure I'd have to carry for him), put on his patch without complaint. I am excited for after school when we get to go see him again!

We signed Calvin up for a sleep study at the hospital. Not sure when it will be yet but after years of bad sleep for him and now that I am seeing it affect his school work and behavior I want to see if there is anything we can do for him.

Many days I think that I am just a terrible mother. Other times I think I'm crazy for thinking that my problems with Calvin have to do with sleep more than my inability to correct and teach him. But then on days like today, when he is rested and completely reasonable, I think maybe there is something more to it. Also, since I have two other kids who sleep well and act well I think that it can't be entirely my doing that Calvin is difficult. Actually Calvin is pretty remarkable. I am amazed that he can survive the day.

I hope this post doesn't sound too much like complaining. I don't mean it to be ... I just thought you might be interested in a sleep update.

Happy Birthday to Dave!

For Dave's b-day I planned a beach day. we tried to get some friends there but it was stake conference and most people couldn't squeeze it in. We are super talented so we were able to squeeze it in (and it helps that dave doesn't have a major calling and wasn't expected at leadership training). I'll have to plan antoher one soon.

When we got home from the beach Alexey was covered with marker. It washed right off in the bath. She had a fun day but all the sand, wind, sunscreen and sun wore her out!
(blogger won't let me cut and paste pictures any more so I am stuck with them in the order I download them. is that happening to you too?)

Dave is 30. He has grown a few hairs on his chest since I met him 11 years ago!

digging a hole. also a good picture of our favorite beach. Look at the beautiful cliffs in the background. I think there is really good hiking up there but we've never tried it. The beach and surrounding area is a state reserve/park. This year instead of getting zoo or sea world passes we got a parking pass to the beach and have enjoyed it very much.

Alexey had fun playing in the hole.

Alexey loved to get buried also. she was laughing here.

Calvin loves to get buried every time we go to the beach. But it does leave him completely helpless. Alexey was crawling all over him and laughing !!!

here he is saying, "mom, help me!"

Here are the girls in the parking lot when we first arrived at the beach. Clare loves to wear her swimming suit and was so excited that she could wear it. The weather has been beautiful!
