Bottom of the 9th
It's time for another Prop 8 post. We are in the final week before the election. The fight for Prop 8 is unlike anything I've seen before. It is a fight. The Yes on 8 people are working hard to be sure that everyone has learned about the consequences if prop 8 fails and now moving on to make sure that all the "yes votes" get out to vote on election day. There are millions of hours and millions that have gone into prop 8 (on both sides) so far and it is time for us "YES ON 8" to put in a valiant and amazing final effort. In baseball terms, it's the bottom of the 9th and the bases are loaded. In football terms, we are in sudden death overtime. In terms of labor, the baby is crowning and it's time for those good hard pushes. It is time to give it all we've got.
I've already outlined how important it is for prop 8 to pass in a post a week or two ago. One thing I hadn't realized at that point is how organized, divisive, and determined the opposition is. The no on 8 camp is determined to win this fight in California. But, the no on 8 camp is not about JUST winning in CA. CA is the first and most important stepping stone in a national agenda for gay rights. Close to 35% money for no on 8 has come from out of state. The whole "gay thinking nation" (can't think of a more politically correct title) is working to suppress this amendment in CA so that they can move to a national level in gaining recognition, power and influence over our leaders, education, religion and speech. It is alarming.
We have been encouraged to use our blogs to help the Yes on 8 campaign. I hadn't considered my private blog a good means to do that because it is private and I have a limited audience who are already believe in the importance of traditional marriage. HOWEVER, I have been thinking a lot about my efforts to pass prop 8 today and feel that I do have more that I can do through my blog. But, it will be done through you.
Here is what I am asking, begging and hoping you will do.
1. Study prop 8 if you have not already done so. Take at least 15 minutes, an hour if you can and read about prop 8. Find out what has been going on in Cali. and Mass. in terms of law suits in schools and churches. See what the effects will be. Read what the other side is hoping to accomplish.
2. Write on YOUR BLOG about the importance of passing prop 8. You have readers that I don't have. Some may be in CA. Some may be elsewhere. In either case, their faith, prayers, $ and time can be used to help us pass prop 8. Between now and NOV 4th I will not post anything, unless it is about Prop 8 so that it is the first and foremost issue on my blog. I won't ask you do that (although you could and it would be great), but do post something about prop 8 between now and NOV 4th.
3. Donate money to Yes on 8. Even if it is just $10. Do it! It makes a difference. If you decide not to eat ice cream this month you can donate your ice cream or treat money to prop 8 (it will be good for the spirit and the body)!! There is a large prop 8 donor that will match every dollar donated between now and election time. The money will be used to add more yes on 8 advertising time on TV.

whenever dave is on call, he checks the blog to see what we've been up to. This week has probably been the worst week ever for him -- with one person on vacation and one person who had to drop out due to health reasons he's been working crazy hours and not seen much of us in person!

captain underpants
This week we brought home a captain underpants book from the library and this afternoon I was reading it to the kids during lunch. Calvin thought it was great!!! He loves to be silly and talk about toilets, and other potty things like diapers. He got a big kick out of the monster getting flushed down the toilet in one of the stories. Anyway, Calvin decided that he would dress up as captain underpants for the church Halloween party tonight. It is not his Halloween costume but he said, "I'll be Captain underpants tonight at the party and then be a power ranger for Halloween!"
It started out with just underwear and a cape, but that's a little inappropriate for any setting outside of the house. So we put some pants on under his underwear for a while. (we started getting dressed for the Halloween party about 3 hours before it started).
Then clare wanted to be CU as well. Or I guess I should say Captain underpanties, so she put her underwear outside her clothes.
But, really she was Cinderella for the Halloween party and wears her Cinderella dress almost every day.

Here is Calvin in the costume parade. The blue tape on his shirt says "captain underpants" He wrote captain himself. Notice his new glasses. They go along with the costume really well but they drive me crazy because they push on his ears so much. We're going to try one other pair that will be very similar, but hopefully a little better fit.
Here are the kids doing the limbo. You might notice that Calvin has given himself another haircut in the front. But so far he hasn't had the time, or been in the mood to let me buzz it so that it's all even. I love Calvin! He is such a quirky kid.

i guess they work -- updated, see bottom of post
Do you know what this is? It is a red light camera. red light cameras take pictures of people who run red lights. Many of the intersections with cameras nearby have yellow markings around the traffic light so that you're reminded not to run the red light. There are a couple of intersections in town that we all KNOW you do not run red lights there!! Anyway, a member of our household (named Dave) ran a red light OCT 9th. Then on OCT 17th we got a ticket in the mail with 4 lovely, in color pictures, including 2 of his car, one of his face, and one of his licence plate. Very sad, very sad indeed. What will dave be getting for christmas? A trip to court and traffic school (or a paid fine) not sure yet. Reading online I learned that you can buy photo blocker spray. IF you Spray your license plates with PhotoBlocker Spray your plate will reflect the light from the flash back to the plate and the picture will NOT show your plate clearly. Maybe dave will get that for christmas instead.
one funny thing about those pictures. when the light turned red dave is pictured stopped at the light. Then 2 seconds later he is in the intersection -- light still red. Apparently he decided he didn't have time to wait, or forgot it was red and went, or something....not too sure. :)
The time of the ticket was 10:15pm. Dave was on his way home from work (for those in town, on the corner of ted williams and pomerado turning left). He was actually talking to me on the phone, using his hands-free head set, of course, and he said, "Oh, Denise, I just ran a red light and saw all the cameras flashing. I hope I don't get a ticket."

Vote Yes on Prop 8 in CA
I think that most of the readers of my blog are out of CA. So, I wanted to fill you in on a large part of my life and the life of many other people in CA.
Prop 8.
Proposition 8 in California is perhaps the most important item on the ballot this year, any ballot. And, even though it might not be on your ballot it will affect you no matter where you are. In my mind, it is much more important than the presidential election and when I stay up on Nov 4th watching TV it will primarily be to see the outcome of this prop.
Prop 8 is a CA constitutional amendment which would state: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."
Here is a brief history: A law was passed in 2002 by 61% of voters in CA stating "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or legal in Ca". In May of this year 4 activist judges overturned this vote saying it is unconstitutional. Now it is back on the ballot as a constitutional amendment.
If Prop 8 fails there are three main issues that take the consequences of this vote outside of the state of CA.
#1. school. If Prop 8 fails, and marriage is no longer defined as between one man and one woman, all pictures in text books or sentences which describe marriage in the traditional way could/would need to be removed. I would imagine that there would not be separate text books for CA but that text book companies around the country would be forced to change. Perhaps this would affect you. Here in CA, because it is already required under the education code that children be taught about marriage in school, children will be taught about gay marriage at a young age. In MA where gay marriage is legal there are stories of children being taught about prince +prince in K-2 grade. In SF recently, a class of 1st graders were taken on a field trip to witness the marriage of a gay couple (one of their teachers). Experience (cases in court) has shown that parental consent is NOT required to teach about marriage in school and parents have no legal right to object the teaching of gay marriage in school.
#2. media/Hollywood. We have already seen over the years, Hollywood has embraced the homosexual lifestyle. Since Hollywood is in CA I can only imagine that If prop 8 fails there will be a flood of media glorifying the homosexual lifestyle.
#3. churches. If marriage is redefined in CA, churches that are worldwide will certainly be affected. Churches will no longer be allowed to teach traditional marriage or it would be considered a hate crime. Churches who refuse to perform homosexual marriages could lose tax exempt status and bishops/priests could be sued or even thrown in jail. These serious consequences will be felt around the country.
It is a heated debate. Those who are No for 8 claim that prop 8 is discriminatory and say, "don't take marriage away from us." They feel deeply offended that other citizens would want to take away their right to be married. HOWEVER, (beware, I am not politically correct and will use religion and biology) what these homosexual couples have IS NOT MARRIAGE. Domestic partnerships already have many of the same privileges as married couples such as visits in the hospital, medical benefits, life insurance, etc. so it is not necessary for them to be called "married" to enjoy privileges. Redefining marriage adds nothing to them, it only takes away from the special-ness and sanctity or traditional marriage. And, weakens society in doing so.
As a supporter of Prop 8, I do believe in being tolerant and accepting all people and being kind to others. I do not condone the homosexual lifestyle. I happen to believe it is wrong. That being said, I would not pass up the opportunity to be friends with, interact with, talk to, or be nice to a homosexual person any more that I would a heterosexual person. HOWEVER, I believe it is my right to teach my own children what marriage is and what moral living is. I also believe I have the right to freely practice religion including learning what things God has taught are not good.
There are other countries which have already opened up the definition of marriage to include homosexual couples and these countries have seen a decline of all types of marriages. Once you defame the real marriage, there is a decrease in the formation of families.

One of my friends at school says she is constantly stopped and people say really rude stuff to her because she has a yes on 8 sticker on her car (i do too but it hasn't happened to me). how can a group claiming to want equality and tolerance for all be so unaccepting and so angry to those who wish to express their view just because it is different than their own?
I could go on and on, but won't. If you are in CA be sure to vote Yes on 8. If you are outside CA, pray that prop 8 passes.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, to which I belong, seldom becomes involved in political issues but because of the nature of this proposition and consequences which affect the church directly, the church has become very involved in this issue. Other churches are also involved. Church members have been working diligently to help prop 8 pass, as have many other good people.

pumpkin carving calvin
Calvin really enjoys carving pumpkins. He picked out his own little pumpkin, drew a face on it and then watched dave carve it for him, giving very careful instructions such as "DAD!! Stay on the lines." "DAD! Make sure you do a rectangle, not a square!"
Today we stayed after school to play on the playground and I noticed Calvin could swing without any help -- I have never seen him do that before. I guess he learned by watching all the kids at school pump their legs.
Also, I ordered Calvin new glasses so hopefully we won't have to look at crooked glasses anymore. I got him rec specs -- made for sports so they should hold up well to the every day use of a five year old boy.

beautiful clare, beautiful sunset
I am not that great of a photographer but last night was the most beautiful sunset I've seen for a long time! I love our view of the west.
This week has been santa ana weather which means it is windy, dry and hot! It has been near 90 most of the week, but it is nice that it cools off a lot at night. the kids have dry lips and chapped faces b/c of the dry air. Last year at this time we had the fires and it is almost every year at this time that there are fires in southern CA.

quick funny story
Last Sunday morning we decided it might be a good idea to get dressed and go to church for general conference since with dave’s bro here there were just too many people to crowd around the computer and watch. So, everyone got ready and right around 8:30 (the broadcast started at 9), I put Alexey to bed because she couldn’t wait another minute. I send dave with both kids and said, “I’ll catch up with you when Alexey wakes up.” Well, the minute I sat down ALL BY MYSELF to watch conference I realized I wasn’t going over to meet dave even if Alexey did wake up. It was just so nice to listen without the two big kids. Anyway, Alexey did sleep ‘til 11 so I had a good excuse to stay home by myself and enjoy a lovely conference session all by myself. Have I mentioned by myself yet?
When Dave got home he was VERY frazzled and pretty upset that I had ditched him. The other family members got quite a kick out of Dave because it was a one in a million time that HE would be the one at church by himself. And if anything, it was easier than most weeks at church because I did have one kid at home (granted, I kept the sweetest and easiest kid).
While at church dave sent the kids to get a drink without an adult. They were gone for 20 minutes and finally clare came back and said, “daddy, Calvin is making a mess.” So, he came to check on them. They had been in the WOMEN’s restroom and had filled up a toilet with an entire roll of toilet paper. So, dave had to clean it all out so that the toilet wouldn’t clog. He was not happy about this – especially since he was in the women’s bathroom!!! Ha, Ha. I still smile thinking of this. (Am I wicked?)

say cheese
Calvin and Clare are trying really hard to say cheese!
One day this week when I picked up Calvin from school I noticed all 3 kids were in red so I brought them home and tried to take their picture. Nothing too fancy -- shirts were dirty and kids were dirty hair wasn't done but it's not very often I get them all to sit still for a minute so I thought it was a fun activity! we have yet to take a picture of our family of 5 (and baby is now 6 months old) so that is the next adventure.

Air Show
Every year we really look forward to the air show in town. The highlight is seeing the blue angels fly.
This year Dave's bro joe came down along with 2 kids, Emiley and Andy. Here are all the kids waiting around for the airplanes. (they gave out free ear plugs for kids, a nice treat since usually the kids have their fingers in their ears all day).

This year it was WAAAYYY more crowded than we had rememberd from years past. To give you an idea of how different it was this year I'll tell you about last year. Last year I picked up DAn from school at 2:30 and then we got to the air show in time to watch the final act around 3:15. This year we left home at 11:30 and got there around 2. (TONS OF TRAFFIC to park and then going through security on foot). We stayed all day..spent a lot of time just hanging out!
Clare likes to put on her own head band. When I was looking through the pics of the day we had about 4 of clare picking her nose...
I asked clare to smile and she growled at me. But you can see that she and dave have the EXACT same eye color.

this week so far
Dave is on vacation this week and we got our house fumigated which means we had to move out for 2 nights.
We went out to breakfast with dave and clare one morning after our house was turned over to the fumigators!
Alexey, happy as usual and just going with the flow.
Here is the house all tented up! Funny story about the gate. The morning the fumigators came to put up the tent, I couldn't find my pool key. I had set it out on the counter to give to the guys and it somehow disappeared (either I put it somewhere safe or the kids waked away with it). I had a backup with someone in the neighborhood so I told the guys that I'd go get it and come back with it. 10 minutes later I returned and the gate was open!!! It is a big dead bolt type lock. When we asked what happened they just said something like, "oh, that guy got it open." CRAZY! It must have taken him 2 minutes because "that guy" was already up on the roof and doing other things. So much for feeling safe when you lock your doors at night.
Calvin, Alexey and I stayed with some friends from church. It was very nice of them to offer to let us stay there. Alexey loved to see herself in the mirror.
Calvin loved to dress up as a power ranger. This is us at dawn playing outside in an attempt not to wake up everyone else in the house.
Calvin is a TERRIBLE roommate. I had to share a bed with him --not a great thing for me! He rolled all over me and wiggled and most of all, he woke up BOTH nights from 12-2am and talked, played, kicked the bed, played with toys, etc. etc. then BOTH mornings he was up at 5. I don't know how he survived on such little sleep. crazy child. I have been wondering if he does that at home at night and I just don't hear him or if that was a result of being in a strange new place.
Dave and Clare went to bakersfield (about 4 hours north of us) to visit dave's brother and family, including princess (cousin) emiley -- sorry I don't have any pics from that venture since Dave didn't take the camera. I was nice to have a break from clare. She is darling but becoming quite a handful. I think that over the last month or two she has taken over the role of "most difficult child" and my suspicion was proven true this week when having her away for two days I didn't miss her, much. She didn't miss me either, never once asking where I was or why she was away with just daddy. She has always been a daddy's girl and prefers him to me all the time (calvin is the opposite). It is hard having dave gone all the time because every day when she is hurt or sad she cries for him and he is not there. Calvin does miss dave when he's gone a lot because it is fun to play with daddy but I feel like for Clare Dave is more of an essential part of her well being.
We went out to breakfast with dave and clare one morning after our house was turned over to the fumigators!

Here is the house all tented up! Funny story about the gate. The morning the fumigators came to put up the tent, I couldn't find my pool key. I had set it out on the counter to give to the guys and it somehow disappeared (either I put it somewhere safe or the kids waked away with it). I had a backup with someone in the neighborhood so I told the guys that I'd go get it and come back with it. 10 minutes later I returned and the gate was open!!! It is a big dead bolt type lock. When we asked what happened they just said something like, "oh, that guy got it open." CRAZY! It must have taken him 2 minutes because "that guy" was already up on the roof and doing other things. So much for feeling safe when you lock your doors at night.
Calvin, Alexey and I stayed with some friends from church. It was very nice of them to offer to let us stay there. Alexey loved to see herself in the mirror.
Calvin loved to dress up as a power ranger. This is us at dawn playing outside in an attempt not to wake up everyone else in the house.
Calvin is a TERRIBLE roommate. I had to share a bed with him --not a great thing for me! He rolled all over me and wiggled and most of all, he woke up BOTH nights from 12-2am and talked, played, kicked the bed, played with toys, etc. etc. then BOTH mornings he was up at 5. I don't know how he survived on such little sleep. crazy child. I have been wondering if he does that at home at night and I just don't hear him or if that was a result of being in a strange new place.
